When you’re functioning on the outside but struggling on the inside—
Depression doesn’t always look like sadness. Sometimes it feels like exhaustion, disconnection, irritability, numbness, or simply not feeling like yourself anymore. You may be going through the motions of everyday life while feeling increasingly disconnected from yourself, other people, or the things that once mattered to you.
You may find yourself struggling with low motivation, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, self-criticism, hopelessness, or a sense that you’re stuck and can’t seem to move forward. Sometimes there is a clear reason for how you feel. Other times, you may not understand why you’re depressed at all.
Therapy can help you understand what is happening beneath the surface and begin to reconnect with yourself.
Moving beyond simply understanding your depression
Talk therapy can help you gain insight into the thoughts, experiences, and patterns that contribute to depression. But sometimes insight alone isn't enough. My approach to depression therapy is experiential and body-aware. Rather than focusing only on what you're thinking about your experience, we can also pay attention to what is happening within you in the present moment—your emotions, sensations, impulses, and patterns of responding.
Depression can sometimes develop alongside unresolved experiences, relational wounds, chronic stress, or a feeling of having become disconnected from your own needs and inner sense of self. By slowing down and becoming curious about these experiences, we can begin to understand what your depression may be communicating and what may need attention or healing.
A different way of experiencing yourself
Together, we may work with the experiences that keep you feeling stuck. This can help you develop a different relationship with difficult emotions, memories, and beliefs about yourself.
The goal isn't simply to get rid of difficult feelings. It's to help you feel more connected to yourself, more able to experience and move through your emotions, and less defined by the experiences that have shaped you.
Over time, therapy can help you reconnect with your own inner wisdom and develop a greater sense of choice, vitality, and possibility.
